ok, that was a bit of an exaggeration, but it did save the day. lemme 'splain. last week, the city turned the power off on our street so they could replace a power pole. we were without electricity for 6 1/2 hours! my near catastrophe occurred at coffee time. i only buy whole bean coffee, so no power = no electric coffee grinder. that's where my camano coffee mill saved the day. with a few cranks of the handle, i had ground coffee.

as for brewing without electricity, that wasn't a problem because i brew my coffee in a chemex coffeemaker.

disaster averted. thanks to my camano coffee mill, i was able to enjoy my mug of love and face the day, even without electricity.

are you equipped to brew coffee without electricity? there are several manual brewing methods to choose from: chemex, hario v60, & french press are just a few. and, if you buy whole beans, don't forget your manual coffee grinder!

when brewing a pot of coffee, my brewing method of choice is the chemex. i have been making coffee in my chemex for about two years now and i will never go back to the automatic drip coffee maker. yes, the chemex is a bit more work because you don't just push a button and walk away. you must tend to it but the result is well worth the effort. how do you brew your coffee?

for mother's day we made it to intelligentsia coffee in pasadena. i had their chemex brewed nyarusiza, which was quite good. check out how they serve their coffee! it comes on little wooden trays with an extra pitcher to top off your coffee. how adorable is that?

today's brew is el gavilan from counter culture coffee. of course it is brewed in my chemex. it is tasty bean from ecuador full of fruitiness (cherry, apricot & peach). ordering coffee from the smaller roasters guarantees you are getting a freshly roasted bag of beans and not a bag that has been sitting on the shelf for months.

chemex for one

i bought myself a little chemex cm-1c and i am lovin' it! it can brew up to 15 ounces; perfect for moi.

it takes it's own little size filters, so i had to get a box of those too. folding this filter is a little like origami. it takes three folds to get it to the right shape.

here it is, brewed up, and ready to drink!

1st brew of 2012

our first brew of the new year was a chemex pot of ethiopian gedeo worka.  it is a very fruity cup of deliciousness.  it was such a beautiful day here in so cal, we got to enjoy it outdoors!

i have been loving my chemex coffee maker ever since it arrived 8 months ago. even though the chemex was invented in the 40's, i just discovered it this year. there are no bells or whistles, no buttons to push, nothing automatic about it. it is just a simple glass carafe (similar to the ones you'd find in a chemistry lab). if you don't mind spending a few extra minutes preparing your pot of joe, you'll get a better brew outta this guy than any electric machine.
